hospital_ward__empty1The UK Government’s increasingly punitive stance towards people who migrant to Britain has led to a severe shortage of doctors in hospitals throughout Wales.

As far back as this May Dr. Hamish Meldrum, chairperson of the British Medical Association Council expressed concerns at the impact that ‘tougher’ border controls could have on health services, stating that new rules would bar many migrant doctors born outside the EU that the NHS relies on from working in the UK. These concerns were unheeded, as the project to tighten borders, intensify social control and enlarge the surveillance state has taken precedence over people’s health.

In a very short period of time the BMA’s concerns have become reality, with recruitment problems for medical staff across the UK. Due to research by Leanne Wood it has been revealed that Wales has been one of the worse hit areas, there are currently problems with filling posts in many of the hospital trusts. The situation has in many cases reached crisis point and in in Swansea two children’s wards had to be closed because of a shortage of doctors.

Empty Hospital CorridorWe advocate complete freedom of movement and equality for everyone, which puts us in direct opposition to those in power who keep us divided and profit at the expense of the vast majority of the worlds population. However it is astonishing, even to us, that the government would be as callous as to use their  ‘migration management’ system to put the lives of the population (who they are ostensibly meant to represent) at risk.

This situation is unacceptable, at the present time the NHS needs defending on many fronts, the blocking of much needed medical staff is but one. We need to send a clear message to the government: Mess with our health and we’ll mess with yours!
